What is the Internet?: Roles

Here is an analogy for the Internet which may help explain its role in enabling services. You could think of the Internet as being like the road network.

Roads of a variety of classes and routes link every major and minor conurbation in the land.


Over those roads travel a number of different types of transport services:

  • Saloon cars and sports cars and hatchbacks

  • Buses and coaches and charabancs

  • Tractors and combine harvesters

  • Vans and lorries and pantechnicons

  • Bicycles and tandems

  • Motorbikes, etc, etc.

Some are new and some are vintage.

Some have one use and some have many uses.
