Making Connections: Connecting Through ISPs
To understand what your ISP does, you have to remember that they are online all of the time.
Your telephone call provides a link between your computer and your ISP's computer (server) and from there out onto the Internet.
The ISP:
Receives thousands of incoming phone calls
Automatically checks that usernames and passwords are current and correct
Gives each remote computer access to the Internet
