Broadband: Section 3

Accessing Broadband Services: DSL & Cable Modem

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line):

  • Was one of the first broadband technologies to become widely available and accounts for roughly 80% of the broadband usage in the UK

  • Uses existing telephone lines to carry data

  • Requires a digital modem (or router) to be connected to your PC

  • It has been restricted in its availability by the limited number of telephone exchanges which have been set up to offer this service

  • It is further restricted by the drop in quality if you are located more than 10 kilometres from the telephone exchange

  • Manifests as ADSL & SDSL or Asynchronous and Synchronous, Asynchronous is high speed download and lower speed uploads whereas Synchronous is high download & upload speeds

Cable Modem technology:

  • Is becoming more and more widely used

  • Uses lines belonging to cable TV companies

  • Is, therefore, only available if you live in an area served by a cable TV company

  • Is usually offered as part of a total package of services including TV deals and phone lines
