Both wireless and satellite technologies:
- Use a fixed antenna with appropriate connections to your PC
- Are only available in certain areas, in the UK
- Are seen as a possible salvation in more rural areas that are unlikely to see the advent of DSL or cable TV in the very near future
- Are in a rapid development cycle that is expected to increase power and decrease costs
Since July 2002, when the Uk Government eased regulations on the running of wireless networks, companies have been installing the technology to increase broadband provision to the harder to reach areas. As such, some of the more remotely located businesses, now have access to broadband through satellite or wireless connections.
Wireless connections are received through the fixed antenna (similar to a satellite dish) which it receives from a radio transmitter up to approximately 30 miles away. As with television, this must have a line of sight to the nearest transmitter.
Satellite connections have connections with the same data rates as the other broadband technologies but the installation and equipment fees, although a one off payment, are far higher. This is mainly for remote businesses or for mobile computing.
