Most people, therefore, have made sure that they have a properly licensed industry standard virus checker installed on their computers.

Sensibly, they also arrange:

To download updated virus definitions on a regular (daily) basis
To automatically scan any incoming information whether it be from a floppy disk, CD- ROM, email attachment or whatever
To schedule regular automatic scanning sessions
