To combat this, you should install an industry-standard personal firewall onto your computer.

A firewall is a program that acts as a gatekeeper and stands guard over any information entering your machine.


A firewall should:

  • Scan your DSL or cable Internet connection looking for hacker activity

  • Inspect the contents of each incoming packet of information looking for hidden hostile code

Verify that Internet-enabled applications are authentic and not "spyware" (software which spies on your system and transmits information back to the initiator) or Trojan horse programs (programs which, like the wooden horse of Greek legend, look like something benign but contain hidden malign activity).
